About Us
Chess club Shah Mata is an official Dutch association with a long tradition: since 1970 we have been getting together every week to play chess. Every Tuesday evening our members gather at Sportcomplex Aldenkamp at Boekenstein 1 in Rotterdam-Zuid, for an evening full of focused games and socialising.
A diverse club
At Shah Mata you will find a fine mix of strong, experienced players and club members who are still very much in development. Our members are both Dutch and international — anyone who loves chess, whether it is your mother tongue or not, is welcome with us.
Classical chess, with room for variation
Our main focus is over-the-board classical chess: calm, focused, and with time to really think about every move. Alongside this, you will regularly see us playing other formats, such as blitz and rapid, for a bit of extra variety alongside the regular competition.
Cosy and competitive
We take our chess seriously — with internal and external competitions in which we fiercely battle for points — but we consider the sociability around it to be at least as important. Before and after the games, there is plenty of time for a good chat and reviewing an exciting move together.
Youth
Alongside our senior section, we also have an active youth group, where we teach children how to play chess and play along with them. A wonderful way to pass on the love for the game to a new generation at an early age.
Curious? Feel free to drop by for an evening to soak up the atmosphere — everyone is welcome, from beginner to advanced player.
